Kirt Edward Simmons was born in the Panama Canal Zone and grew up in Texas, where he graduated cum laude from Austin College, and earned D.D.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. At the University of North Carolina, he completed his residency in orthodontics, and a fellowship in craniofacial anomalies funded by the NIH. Dr. Simmons has been the faculty orthodontist on the cleft/craniofacial teams of Indiana University and the University of North Carolina. He has pursued research in craniofacial abnormalities, bone physiology, dental implants, orthodontic pain, TMJ, and the effects of endocrine disorders on facial and dental growth.
Dr. Simmons is an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in the Departments of Surgery and Otolaryngology. As Orthodontic Director at Arkansas Children's Hospital, he provides all orthodontic treatment for the Craniofacial Deformities and Cleft Lip and Palate Teams as well as also treating children with other types of significant medical problems. His current research explores new techniques of cleft bone repair. He has been an active member of the American Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Association since 1986. He is currently the President of the Arkansas Association of Orthodontists and serves in committees for the American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Simmons also serves as dental/orthodontic consultant for several support groups: the MAGIC Foundation since 1990, Wide Smiles since 1992, the Turner’s Syndrome Society since 1996, and the Noonan’s Syndrome Society since 1997. He has given presentations across the United States and around the world to various groups from Girl Scouts to medical specialists to medical researchers.
